Quote of the day - Milton Friedman
Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

"And indeed, the burden of Cassandra's "gift" is evident in mythology. She predicted the outcome of many disastrous events. In one memorable example, Cassandra announced the dire consequences of the Trojans accepting the infamous Wooden Horse from their Greek opponents. But as Apollo made certain, no one believed Cassandra when she warned her companions about the future. And this, in the end, was to be Cassandra's tragic fate."
Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

They proclaim that every man is entitled to exist without labor and, the laws of reality to the contrary notwithstanding, is entitled to receive his "minimum sustenance" his food, his clothes, his shelter, with no effort on his part, as his due and his birthright. To receive it, from whom?
So it appears that the dire MSM/DNC hurricane predictions for 2006 have been proven false.

What we have discovered in Iraq is the weakest link in the ability of the United States to sustain military operations overseas. That link is the U.S. media. They are Islamists' best friends.

If you measure the births of the Muslim world against the dearth of Bishop Kate's Episcopalians, you have the perfect snapshot of why there is no "stability": With every passing month, there are more Muslims and fewer Episcopalians, and the Muslims export their manpower to Europe and other depopulating outposts of the West. It's the intersection of demography and Islamism that makes time a luxury we can't afford.

A number of the nation's leading colleges — including Harvard, Amherst, the University of Chicago and the Naval Academy — will admit students who have not finished high school. Many outstanding students would do well to get out of high schools that are wasting their time and go straight into college.

On December 5, 1986, National Review commented on the midterm elections, in which the Democrats retook the Senate from the Republicans:
So Senator Joseph Biden takes over as chairman of the Judiciary Committee. As a presidential aspirant, he will have to scream a lot less and appear statesmanlike. The Democratic victory means that Reagan judicial appointments will have at least marginally rougher going. Which, in turn, somewhat enhances the Supreme Court prospects of Senator Orrin Hatch, who would sail through any Senate committee. The rumor that Biden plans to reopen the Chappaquiddick case is clearly too good to be true. Of course, Teddy could always receve a presidential pardon, which would close the case forever.

Jefferson said that "jealousy" -- suspicion of those in power -- is essential to freedom. But we are now accused of "paranoia" the moment we begin to distrust our rulers.

As we can see in Europe every day of the week, Big Government is a national security issue -- for all the reasons Milton Friedman understood: In diminishing individual liberty, it transforms free-born citizens into nanny-state charges to the point where it imperils the existence of the nation.

Bush also named Alberto Gonzales the first Hispanic attorney general. He made an Arab-American, Spencer Abraham, secretary of energy; a Cuban-American, Carlos Gutierrez, secretary of commerce; an Asian-American, Elaine Chao, secretary of labor; and a retarded-American, Norman Mineta, secretary of transportation. It was as if Mariah Carey and Tiger Woods had children and they all joined the Bush Cabinet.
Those looking to find a reason for the Pelosi/Murtha alliance that resulted in the second of many blunders of Pelosi's career as THE FIRST WOMAN SPEAKER of the HOUSE (the first blunder being her advocacy of retreat from Al Qaeda) may want to look further into Nancy Pelosi's role as a longtime partner in Presidio Partners, an investment company with ties to federal military base closings in San Francisco.
Drudge is reporting that Milton Friedman has died. I can find no stories about Dr. Friedman's death anywhere else. He was 94 years old.

Al Qaeda has announced that there are 12,000 Al Qaeda fighters in Iraq. Even assuming that this number is an exaggeration, it is beyond dispute that Al Qaeda maintains a major presence in Iraq.

I downloaded "Blogger beta" yesterday to take advantage of the software updates. From now, all posts here will include "labels" that categorize the subject matter. This makes it easier to find old posts. This will be especially important from this point forward as we trace the Democrats' surrender strategy from post to post.

"These Colors Don't Run" is a fine T-shirt slogan, but in reality these colors have spent 40 years running from the jungles of Southeast Asia, the helicopters in the Persian desert, the streets of Mogadishu. ... To add the sands of Mesopotamia to the list will be an act of weakness from which America will never recover.

It’s hard to imagine liberal Catholics — especially liberal Catholic politicians — embracing the idea that the moral law is an integrated whole, whose parts can’t be violated without tearing the entire fabric. Try to picture Mario Cuomo or Ted Kennedy warning that sexual license may produce widespread social problems, or that contraception can weaken the family.

Manuel Miranda nails the Pennsylvania Senate race in this Human Events column:
Pennsylvanians may think that voting for Bob Casey Jr. is a viable alternative to Santorum because Casey is Catholic and pro-life. You are wrong. Casey has already told you that. He said the life issue will not be central to what he will do in the Senate. New York’s Sen. Chuck Schumer’s has told you also. Schumer told big liberal donors that Casey would vote with him to block judges. And as Schumer added, “that is the whole ball of wax.”

I have written before about how I hate polls. I repeat my opposition to polls here. I do this even as the Republicans supposedly enjoy an upswing in "the polls" that threatens to wipe out Democratic leads in the final day of the 2006 campaign.
4. Polls. An offshoot of ventriloquist journalism is the MSM/DNC's reliance upon polls. The polls that the MSM/DNC uses are either (1) unreliable or blatantly false and/or (2) self-fulfilling prophecies. It is a common tendency among humans (especially those who have been softened by 70 years of the welfare state) to want to be on the winning side. When the MSM/DNC releases its polls showing some Democrat with a lead or that the "public" thinks that Social Security is just fine, those who might otherwise harbor doubts are intimidated into going along with the majority. I am sure that the MSM/DNC will continue their efforts to bully the public into acquiescing in the status quo on social security with just this tactic.

It is beyond dispute that the Democrats take the Black vote for granted. Bob Casey has learned to take the Black vote for granted before he has even achieved national office (H/T Santorum blog [not affiliated with the Santorum campaign]):
Bob Casey has an interesting relationship with the NAACP.
He’s currently a member, which is fine. But that doesn’t really exempt him from skipping out on their events, like a candidate forum. The other three statewide candidates where there. But he claimed he was too busy with Senator Barack Obama in Pittsburgh.
The only trouble is that Obama was in California.
The man who’s schedule is tightly held secret had something else going on. More important than trying to earn the black vote.
And if you’re going to lie about where you were, why would you lie with a very famous Senator who’s on a book tour? Dumb!
In any case, Bobby Casey’s personal financial disclosure form states that he was a member of the NAACP starting in 2000. He let it lapse in 2002, the same year he lost the gubernatorial primary.
But lo and behold, he’s running in a high-profile statewide race again, so he decides to rejoin.

After reading Drudge's report of the apparent theft of electronic smart cards in Tennessee, I was reminded of some of the election scandals of 2004 that were never resolved. Particularly, I was reminded of Governor Rendell's attempt to suppress the votes of American soldiers fighting overseas.

The MSM/DNC would like to put John Kerry's remarks behind us, as it attempts to refocus the nation's attention back to Mark Foley.

The left is so transparent: Nobody ever heard of this incredibly important research on human embryos until 10 minutes ago. Yet everyone makes believe he's known about the undiscovered bounty in human embryos forever, and talks about it with real moral indignation. This whole debate is a hoax designed to trick Americans into yielding ground on human experimentation.
